Can you embed video in email?

Short answer: no.

Longer answer: Google results will make you think there’s a workaround, but there really isn’t one that works consistently yet. Not across devices. Not across inboxes.

Here’s the current best practice for video in email.

  1. Host your video elsewhere. YouTube and Vimeo are the easiest options.

  2. Make a GIF preview. I cut a clip with QuickTime and exported it as a looping GIF. It gives readers the feeling of motion without requiring video support.

  3. Add a play button and progress bar. I used Canva. It signals “this is a video” in a split second.

  4. Drop the GIF into your email and link it to your video. That’s the closest we get to embedding. Gmail may even show it as an attachment! Don’t forget your alt text.

  5. And most importantly: write the content. Don’t make the video mandatory. People scan emails. They’re on the bus. They’re in line. They’re holding a toddler or clearing out their inbox in a meeting. They might not have sound on.

Give them the actual takeaway inside the email. If they want more, they’ll watch.

Did you? Watch my video? You didn’t have to because I wrote all the content. And that’s perfectly fine.
